PHYS-KIDS
was established in 2000 by Paul Gilmore B.Ed - our chief coaching
consultant.
After
graduating from the University of Birmingham with an honours
degree in Physical Education and Sports Science plus Qualified
Teacher Status from Newman College, Paul worked for a number
of years as a class teacher in numerous primary schools in Birmingham
and Solihull. During this time, he discovered the standard of
Physical Education and provision for sport in primary schools
needed considerable development. Teachers were under increasing
pressure to reach standards in core subjects and the curriculum
was becoming more centrally prescribed.
Market
research confirmed that primary schools lacked staff with specialist
sports skills as well as the time or recourses to implement
any sports coaching effectively.
As
an international sportsman, Paul found that his coaching skills
were in high demand at the schools where he worked as a teacher.
He was able to raise the standard of sport in these particular
schools.
Paul
also had access to other coaches who could also raise the standards
of sport and P.E in other schools. By simply recognising an
unavoidable weakness in the education sector, the PHYS-KIDS
organisation was formed. It continues to grow, with demand from
schools rising and involvement of expert coaches increasing.
